Highway Cleanup

2021 Annual Highway Clean Up

This year, a small group of the GC SME board members banded together to clean up the section of highway that they have adopted through Arizona’s Adopt-A-Highway program. Each year, GC SME cleans this stretch of highway on AZ State Route 96 near their head quarters in Bagdad, AZ.

Thanks for all the help: Daniel, Christina, Alex, Gilbert, Kody, and Amber (from left to right)!

2021 Children’s Library stem night

GC SME was represented quite well by 5 of our board members at the Bagdad Community Library STEM Night. Each year, the Bagdad Community Library hosts a STEM event with interactive booths for children to learn more about careers in different STEM fields. This year, Alex, Brian, Dan, Gilbert, and Amber (from left to right) showed off their knowledge of rocks from the open pit nearby.

Gilbert is the Geologist in the group so he talked about the different rock types we extract from the nearby mine and he had each visitor to the booth guess which rock has copper within it. We even copper plated some galvanized nails using one of the rocks on the table. How neat!

Brian also showed off some impressive blasting videos from the pit. What kids don’t like to watch large explosions? What a fun night!

MEntorship

GC SME teamed up with FMI-Bagdad to produce a list of volunteers to provide to the local school in Bagdad. People with different backgrounds in mining, metallurgy, accounting, maintenance, etc., signed up to become mentors for the school. We are awaiting to see what the school would like to do with that list, but in the meantime, we are ready to help our community wherever we can!
